Bicycle Safety Basics

ShareWhen riding a bike here are some suggestions to make your ride safe and pleasurable. Ride with a helmet and use a light. A bell is a must even though it is not common in the States. In addition, equip your bike with a small bag and include a pump, bike tool, and tire patch kit. Bicycle SafetyThese basic safety rules are from the Eye to Eye Traffic Safety Campaign web site. - Always ride with traffic, nothing is worse than a head on!
- Ride Defensively. bike are smaller than cars and many people have a hard time seeing you.
- Yield on Sidewalks, nothing is more irritating than having someone on a bike almost run into you when you're on a sidewalk, don't be the rude biker.
- Walk on Crowded Downtown Sidewalks, Once again sidewalks are for pedestrians.
- Stay on the Right, watch out for car doors, and don't ride erratically so cars can judge where you'll be.
- Securely Lock Your Bike, no explanation needed.
- Make a Safe Left Turn, stay on driver's side of lane so you are visible, or head for the crosswalk.
- Occupy a Lane, if the lane is narrow, use the whole thing to avoid doors.
- Use Lights and Reflectors, the more reflectors or reflective clothing the better, also use front and rear lights.
- Follow Lane Markings, cars use them and will expect you to do the same. keep everyone on the same page.
- Don't Pass on the Right, drivers can't see you if you're in their blind spot!
